SR22 Insurance By UltraCar Insurance
The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) requires an SR22 Maine insurance filing for license reinstatement when you become eligible. Common reasons for drivers license suspensions include unpaid traffic tickets, accumulation of too many points, unpaid traffic fines, driving a vehicle without insurance, unpaid child support, careless or reckless driving, a legal judgment or court order and drunk driving charges. SR22 is a proof of financial responsibility certificate that is issued by an authorized insurance company, and is filed with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. This allows the motorist to keep a valid driver license, or get a restricted license, which allows the person to drive to and from work or school. The SR22 Maine requirement applies to anyone who wants to continue driving after license suspension, whether or not the person owns a vehicle.
You must maintain the insurance once you start the process without any interruption or lapse of coverage for a period of three years in most cases. If even one premium payment is missed, your insurance provider notifies the BMV by filing an SR26, which cancels the SR22. At that time your license will be suspended once again, and you’ll end up paying another reinstatement fee and file a new certificate. Therefore, it is in your best interest to maintain it without any interruption.
You can purchase a non owner policy if you don’t own an auto or a motorcycle, which is less expensive than an owners policy (see Maine Non Owner SR22 Insurance). You can always convert the policy to an owner-operator policy should you purchase a car, or vice versa.
State of Maine minimum mandatory liability coverage requirements are as follows:
- $50,000 bodily injury per person per incident
- $100,000 per accident
- $25,000 property damage per incident
- $50,000/$100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury for each incident
- $2,000 medical payment coverage
Terms used for alcohol or drug related violations and convictions in Maine:
- DUI (Driving Under the Influence) is a term that describes operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other chemicals.
- DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) is a term used widely in the U.S., and includes impairment by any type of intoxicating substance.
- OUI (Operating Under the Influence) is a more comprehensive term to describe operating any type of motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant. This can include operating an automobile, boat, tractor, snow mobile, etc.
The penalties for impaired driving violations are tougher, especially for younger drivers, and can include the requirement to install an ignition interlock device if the BAC (blood alcohol content) result is higher than the legal limit. BAC measures the amount of alcohol in your body. The BAC limit in Maine is .08% for people age 21 and older; there is a “zero tolerance” rule for people under 21 years of age.
A traffic lawyer may be able to reduce some of the penalties associated with DUI charges, and it may be tempting to try to fight the charges against you, but the cost of hiring an attorney should be weighed against the benefits before involving legal assistance.
What if I move out of state?
If you relocate to a different state, your are still required to maintain the Maine high risk insurance requirement. You need to be aware that the insurance company where you relocate must be licensed in both states. For instance, let’s say you moved from Maine to Nebraska. Your insurance provider must be licensed in Nebraska and Maine in order to process both SR22 certificates. UltraCar insurance is licensed in 34 states, and has taken care of many clients who have relocated to a different state.
Who has the cheapest SR22 Maine insurance?
Well that’s a very good question, and there is no good single answer. SR22 Maine premiums are influenced by many factors such as a person’s driving record, number and type of moving violations, make/model of car driven and other considerations. You’ll pay a higher premium if you have numerous violations, especially within the past three years. Other personal factors are considered in determining an individual’s rate, such as their age, occupation, gender, marital status and where in the state they live. Densely populated areas such as big cities have more expensive rates than rural areas.
When looking for SR22 Maine insurance online, you can usually narrow it down to about three insurance providers from which to get quotes. A word of caution, stay away from companies that advertise “SR22 as low as $15.00!” You’ll find out that they are actually the most expensive companies after you call them. UltraCar Insurance never claims to be the cheapest, but offers among the most competitive SR22 Maine quotes available.
